Wasted Money

Dear Ken
Our RV needs major TLC. The roof is black, supposed to be white, and the sides are oxidized. We haven’t moved it in 2 years. We wish to use it in our business, but need it to present well if it can. Otherwise we need to trade it in on a new one.

Dear Wasted Money
I understand your RV must look like hell, and that your Rubber top which should be recoated every 5 years has been neglected. In my experience I have been able to make an old decrepit RV come back to life. However, you must be willing to spend the money for the work. It could take more than a days work. However, it will be obviously worth it in your case that you wont have to buy a new one as the RVs dont typically hold there value. Would have been better to maintain it on a regular basis. Wash it once a quarter or after each use. Wax twice a year. You’ll be in good shape.

Prologue: RV was detailed and looks better than new. I recoated the top, compounded polished and waxed the sides, polished all metals and dressed all rubbers. Rims came out beautiful. Customer was so happy. Turns out its getting on the road for a political campaign. Lookout incumbents. I vote for Ken’s on the Spot, LOL.

Oh my god, I let my friend Park my Mom’s car and holy cow there are scratches all down the side from a bush.  I don’t know what to do, can you get these scratches out?

Scared Son, Orange County, Mission Viejo

Dear Scared Son,

Tomorrow morning I can go over there and perform an exterior restoration auto detail on the vehicle.  This way, the whole car will look way better and if I cannot get all the scratches out, at least the car will look better than when I began.  It’s not that you make mistakes, its that you own up to them and make amends and I applaud you for taking care of your own wreckage.

Follow up:  I did this detail and promised 90% scratch removal.  The customer stated that I got more than 100% of the damage, as there were already scratches in the vehicle.  He said he was just gonna tell Mom that he did it for her because she was so nice to let him use the car and that he wanted to do something nice for her to express the gratitude.  As long as he felt good and Mom felt good, I did my job!!!

I have had a weird odor in my car for the last year that noone seems to be able to get rid of.  I have had many car detailers try and remove the odor but to no avail.  Do you have any ideas?

Your Client

Donna Wanta Bestincy, Orange County, Lake Forest

Dear Donna

I empathize with your problem as I had bought a truck with a sour milk smell I wasnt able to remove until I took the seats out and removed the carpets.  I have heard of dead rats in the air ducts and folks actually had to have a dashboard removed to get to the odor.  However, many times an odor can be treated a bit easier.  My Ne Plus auto detail service for Odor removal actually utilizes a process that not only neutralizes odors safely, but continues to neutralize odors long after I am gone.  It is actually a miracle product that ties in perfectly with an interior Detail service.  This process is only an additional $75 added to a regular interior detail price.  See my menu for details at www.kensonthespot.com .  I have seen vehicles totalled out because the cost of removing the odor was more costly than what the car was worth.  Ne’ Plus can significantly remove odors and freshen air safely without taking the car apart.  Some customers even like this service done because it creates a healthier environment in the car even when there is no detectable odor.

Son’s Car

Dear Ken,

My son’s 2000 Infinity is a mess.  He doesnt take care of it and he smokes inside.  He rides in it with his freinds and it just stinks.  He is going away to college and I really want to get it detailed, but is it really worth the money to detail it?

Your loyal client

Frustrated Dad, Orange County, Newport Coast

Dear Frustrated Dad,

I understand your concern, and from the sound of things you will need an all or nothing top to bottom restorative auto detail.  The complete auto detail for $189 covers most of it, with an additional $75 for me to buff the paint out.  So herein lies the problem.  You are comparing the cost of my service to the cost of your car and not even looking at the real value in this.

As parents, it is frustrating to teach a teenager anything.  Your child is driving Depression on Wheels and yet he is unwilling to do anything about this .  He has become comfortable in his own comfortable mess.  He no longer knows what it feels like to own a clean car for any length of time.  This is a condition that will fester into other areas of his life if it hasn’t already.  Imagine how he would feel to come back to a car that was cleaned and restored.  Now I am not promising miracles here, as he will probably mess it up again in weeks.  However, over time, and with a proper maintenance package, the teenager will gradually get used to the feeling of a clean car and become grateful for it.  Gratefulness leads to Stewardship.  The lesson of Stewardship is priceless.  This is the true value of my work, don’t you agree?
